LAPS will serve students who are expelled from school (grades 6-12) for drugs or weapons violations or violent/aggressive behavior. Students removed from the CAPS program may also be eligible. additionally, students returning to school following incarceration may be placed in the LAPS program by Child Welfare and Attendance.

Entrance  Requirements

A student between the ages of 12 and 16 in grades 6-12 who is enrolled in Lafayette Parish School. Students 17 or older after the first day of school are ineligible. However, age waivers may be requested.

AND

has been expelled, or has been removed from the educational setting through due process

Once it is determined that the principals recommendation for expulsion will be upheld by the Child Welfare and Attendance Hearing Office, the student may then make application to LAPS within a five day period. Once the application is submitted, the student and his/her parents are interviewed by the administration to determine if the student is accepted into the program. When the student is accepted, he/she is readmitted as a student in the Lafayette Parish School System on conditional status.

Exit Requirements

The student has :

1. achieved set goals in the Boys Town Educational Model,

    and

2. recommendation is made by staff, or

3. completed graduation requirements, or

4. reached maximum age.
